Mistaken Identity by Jacob Smith, age 14, UK

It was Friday evening; I’d just finished my shift in the store.

It was Friday the 13th.

I remember the date exactly because all of my co-workers at the store kept repeating it, because they were scared something bad would happen.

Of course I didn’t believe in all of that superstitious nonsense.

So back to the beginning.

I was on my way home, about 2 miles away from the store.

I got to a crossroad and noticed a footpath l had never seen before, running alongside a wood.

I figured out that if I took that path I could cut down my normally long walk home to a quick 10 minute stroll.

Then I remembered what day it was and started to back away from the entrance to the footpath.

Even though I was apprehensive I decided to pull myself together and I started down the path which was narrow and poorly lit, twisting and turning with overgrown shubbery.

As I neared the wood I sensed something was wrong, it was so dark now.

I started to panic, my heart was pounding in my chest , the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end as I walked further down the track.

Suddenly a shiver went down my spine, I had the feeling that someone was watching me.

I looked behind me and saw that there was nothing but trees.

I tried to push the thought out of my head, of course no one was watching me, why would they?

But a nagging voice in my head kept telling me what a bad idea it was to come down here.

Then I heard a twig snap behind me. I quickly twisted around and came face to face with my uncle.

Now that might not sound so scary to you.

But if I told you that my uncle had been dead for 10 years…

and that when he was alive he brutally murdered 10 people in the space of a year…

it becomes a lot more scary!

So now you know about him, you will understand why I was terrified at that moment.

I felt frozen to the spot, as if my feet were stuck in mud.

He stood completely still, dressed head to toe in black, his face gaunt and grey, with piercing eyes fixed on me.

I said his name, but there was no response!

After what seemed like forever I plucked up the courage to stretch out a quivering hand to touch him and the figure grabbed my wrist.

I screamed and was filled with terror! What was this vision, was it real?

Did my uncle know it was me that had reported his suspicious behaviour to the police leading to his arrest and imprisonment?

Had he returned from the dead to seek his revenge?

‘Jeff’, the figure exclaimed ‘What are you doing down here’?

It was Dad – my uncle’s twin. ‘I’ve come to give you a lift home, lets go’.
