Discover Asterix and Obelix - image of a child reading an Asterix and Obelix comic book on a park bench.

What’s the idea?

Discover Asterix and Obelix cartoons and learn more about their world of interesting characters, as well as a bit of history, during Summer Solstice.

What’s the story?

We’re celebrating the Asterix and Obelix books as part of our Summer Solstice activities.

Asterix is a French cartoon series that has been running since 1959.

The lovable main characters, Asterix and Obelix, are Gauls who spend their days battling against Roman occupation.

The Gauls were a group of Celtic people from the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD, and are considered by historians to be paganists.

There are 34 comic books, translated into over 100 languages, plus 13 films to enjoy.

You can even find a dedicated theme park in France!

People should do this because…?

Even though Asterix is loose with historical facts, it is still bursting with entertaining insights into the Gauls

You’ll learn about their way of life, beliefs, worship practices, pagan gods and druid friends.

This is a fun way for all ages to enjoy an introduction into this ancient community as its humour will appeal to young and old.

Highlights include:

  • The funny character names. They include Geriatrix, the oldest inhabitant of Asterix’s village and Getafix, the village druid who concocts potions for super human power.
  • Asterix and Cleopatra episode. This is a parody of the Antony and Cleopatra film. This was also made into a film featuring Gerard Depardieu!
  • The Mansions of the Gods episode. This celebrates the Gauls’ love of nature. Caesar tries to weaken local customs in Gaul by creating a vacation resort near the village. The villagers sabotage the plan by magically replanting trees at the building site.

How do you do it?

You can find many clips and also full-length films of Asterix and Obelix on YouTube.

In addition, many books, comics, DVDs and merchandise are available to buy online.
